Crowns are used to restore and enhance teeth that are damaged or to take the place of missing teeth by completing a dental implant treatment. Because crowns are a type of porcelain cap, Dr. Joseph Szymczak will use a crown to cover a damaged tooth entirely. This treatment will not only strengthen a tooth, but it will also dramatically improve a tooth’s appearance, shape and alignment. We may use a crown to:
- Replace a large filling when there is little tooth structure remaining
- Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Attach a bridge
- Cover a dental implant
- Improve a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
- Restore a tooth that has had root canal treatment
During the initial part of the crown treatment, our dentist will take an impression of your mouth. This serves as the template for your crown so the right size and shape can be replicated. In order to custom make each crown to fit your smile and match the color of your teeth, a dental laboratory will fabricate each dental crown in Grand Rapids, Michigan. During that same visit, the damaged portion of the tooth is removed and your tooth will be fitted with a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready. Once the permanent crown is ready, you will return to our office so our dentist can bond the crown in place.
