It can be challenging sometimes to sort out the difference between an effective oral hygiene product and on that is only intended for cosmetic use. Fortunately, the American Dental Association has their Seal of Acceptance program to help consumers choose the best oral hygiene products for their family.

The ADA instituted their Seal of Acceptance program in 1931 to help establish standards for the safety and effectiveness of oral hygiene products. Since that time it has become the standard of quality for participating manufacturers.

A products participation in the program is voluntary. If a manufacturer wants to earn they ADA Seal of Acceptance for a particular product they can submit it to the ADA for testing and research, before it launches. The ADA will then test active ingredients for safety and its effectiveness as part of an oral hygiene routine. If the product meets the rigorous guidelines, it will earn the right to portray the Seal of Acceptance on the label.

The ADA also provides an index of all oral hygiene products that have earned the seal on their website.

If you have any questions about the safety and effectiveness of the oral hygiene products your family uses, you can call MI Roots Family Dental at 616-453-0002 to set up a consultation

To protect your oral health, you should replace your toothbrush—or at least it’s head for electric toothbrushes—every three to four months? Have you heard that choosing the right toothbrush can help you protect your oral health? If you would like to learn more about the perks and disadvantages of different toothbrushes, please continue reading.

Effectiveness: The most important thing you can do for your smile is brush and floss every day. Your toothbrush should allow you to easily reach all of your teeth. A head that is too large may make your toothbrush hard to maneuver. You should also consider the hardness of your bristles. For most people, soft-bristled toothbrushes are the safest choice. Using harder bristles could damage your gums if you brush too vigorously.

Expert recommendation: We recommend finding a toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Approval. If a toothbrush has this seal, the bristles won’t fall out, the handle will survive normal use, and the toothbrush will safely and effectively reduce plaque build-up. In electric toothbrushes, this seal means that the toothbrush is safe for the teeth and your mouth.

Cost: Cost is an important factor when choosing a toothbrush. Typically, electric toothbrushes are more expensive than a manual toothbrush. In addition to the initial expense, the head of an electric toothbrush will also need to be replaced about every four months. However, if an electric toothbrush helps you improve your oral health, you may save money in dental bills.
